Port Elizabeth by Francois Venter

October 2026 - Port Elizabeth

About the Image(s)

Port Elizabeth is on the South coast of South Africa. Our Photographic Society of South Africa was hosted there. I took this photo there one morning. Shot from a tripod. ISO32, 70mm1.3s @ F22. I think I had a 3 stop Neutral density filter on the lens as well to get the shutterspeed down. The whole idea was to get the water to blur a bit in the foreground but to have solid objects sharp.

It was shot with my Nikon Z8 and Sigma Art 24-70 F2.8 lens. It was shot about an hour after sunrise at 6:30.

I like your use of shutter speed here. You can see the movement of the waves, but not completely smoothed.

I don't know if you cropped this, to me, I'd like to see a tiny bit more breathing room at the top. I'd also consider cropping out the bottom a bit as I find the rock a tiny bit distracting.   Posted: 10/17/2026 16:10:03

I really like this image. The waves in slow motion ads a painterly quality to it. My eyes raise to the ship though part of me is torn between almost a disconnect where it could be two pictures. My mind does settle on the fact that the boat and cranes are protected. Great shot   Posted: 10/19/2026 05:29:00

I think this is an interesting image and, in my opinion, you have executed the technical aspects very well. I like what you've done with the water and slight waves in the foreground. I also like how you have used the lighting.

For me the dock and ship in the background are too far back (and thus too small) to ad much to the image. However without them there is a lack of a specific item of interest. I tend to agree with Darcy that this could be two photos.   Posted: 10/26/2026 14:55:18
