Canadian Geese On Frozen Pond by Drema Swader

October 2026 - Canadian Geese On Frozen Pond

About the Image(s)

The Canadian Goose is migrating through Wisconsin right now. When I lived in California and visited this area in the winter, I couldn't understand why the locals condemned the birds so much. Now that I have lived here for a few years, I totally understand the sentiment.

This image was taken almost two years ago when the surface of the pond was frozen and the geese were walking around on the ice. I didn't know it was frozen until I saw them land and start to walk around. I wonder if they wished they had foot warmers or little booties!

Great image Drema. I wonder why the geese weren't startled by the drone and take flight. I also wonder if the birds are covered by a tariff.

I like the shadows on the ice and the feel of early winter - with that in mind maybe reduce the green intensity in the grass patch to the left?

Thank you! Good catch on the green patch. I didn't even see it... I definitely will tone that down, thanks.

They should tariff the little sidewalk destroyers! And they think they own everything... there is a "herd" of them living down the street, and they are reluctant to move out of the way when a car comes by! I've seen them play chicken with more than one person.

Still, this group was starting to turn away as I came closer with the drone; just the one in the center was saying, "who are you, and where do you think you are going?" :)

While it's not good to interfere with wildlife while flying or even when photographing birds, they usually scare away before I can get this close.   Posted: 10/18/2026 19:35:37

This is a nice image. I first thought it was taken on the ground. Love the shadows and great detail it is almost surreal. The one in the center is looking at the drone. That is real black ice.Looks like they are looking for food? Great shot   Posted: 10/17/2026 17:12:33

Thank you!

It was mostly an overcast day, so it wasn't shadows but reflections.

And I guess it shows that just because it is a drone doesn't mean we can't photograph near ground level. There was a reedbed on my side of the pond, so I wouldn't have been able to get close enough to get a clear shot of them.   Posted: 10/18/2026 19:41:51
