ICM by Laurie McShane

October 2026 - ICM

About the Image(s)

I'm not sure how most people feel about ICM - Intentional Camera Movement.
After taking many, many shots of the colorful trees near me today, I tried some with ICM. The colors shown are what was in front of me with the exception of the dark ferns at the base of the tree. I lightened them some, and cleaned up the image a little by cloning out a couple of sticks that I didn't like. It kind of feels like a watercolor to me, and I like the softness of it. I look forward to your suggestions! Thank you.

I have experimented with ICM in the past with a camera club group, and it was fun to experiment with it.
The fall colors and vertical camera movement in your photo work beautifully together. I especially like how the central trees retain enough definition to anchor the image. I wonder if bringing a little more detail into the darkest area might balance the image while keeping the wonderful ICM .   Posted: 10/03/2026 02:04:54

Kathleen, thanks for your suggestions. Good idea on the dark area!

Laurie, this is a very beautiful treatment. I haven't experimented at all with ICM, but I have a photography friend who is admittedly "addicted" to it and shares some interesting images as a result. His favorite movement is moving the zoom in and out with the shutter open.
I experimented with some post-processing techniques in PS to see what a different movement might look like. This is using the "Wind" filter, which I suppose would be moving it side to side. Would this be a valid way to preview ICM?

Teresa, it's about time I pay more attention to PS! The wind filter is interesting as I've always done the movement in camera. It's fun to do, even though you take a lot of shots to get the one you like!   Posted: 10/21/2026 12:35:57

Laurie, I hope I didn't come across as suggesting this as a replacement for your wonderful in-camera work. Never having done it, I was more interested in how much control can be exercised. So I went out and tried it this week and I have a new appreciation for your work, as all I got were jerky blurs. Thank you for sharing this technique and opening up the discussion to this art form. It's fun to try new things!   Posted: 10/24/2026 12:06:34

This is very timely. Alan Brown (https://www.alanbrownphotography.com) is talking to our Camera Club tonight via zoom on ICM. I love this image. The fall colors I think are perfect for ICM.   Posted: 10/27/2026 15:30:53
