About the Image(s)

During a May rain this Spring a hoverfly clung to the window in my sunroom door. As I looked out at it, I noticed that it was superimposed on a reflection of a table with a checkered tablecloth. Thus was the concept of "Horse Fly" born. I photographed the image-reflection composite with an iPhone 16 pro max. The image was imported into LightRoom Classic, and various sections were masked and adjusted to create a blanketed horse with the head of a fly. I removed his wings to ensure eligibility in the KY Derby.

Hi Judith, I got the idea on first inspection. When I thought about it further, the fly reminded me of a fuzzy antelope. The 'body' is a bit toy looking. Is the fly too blue or just alien. Good masking. Very original concept thought way out of the box. Karl   Posted: 10/03/2026 15:22:14

Thanks for your comments. The body is toy-looking because afterall it is the reflection of a table covered with a checkered tablecloth. In retrospect, the toyish body keeps the image out of the horror fantasy realm which was not at all my intent. The head is blue to strengthen its connection to the blue body. The image concept is the result of a chance confluence of weather, reflection and a hovering fly. When I looked at that window I saw a fanciful chimera. My processing reflects my attempt to realize that fantasy.   Posted: 10/03/2026 15:50:31

Ha, I bet that the wings would have qualified it for the Faerie's Unicorn Derby! How creative and I enjoyed your image only to think of the chimera possibilities. I'd have kept the wings!!   Posted: 10/22/2026 19:46:14
