Flowering Kale by Dick States

October 2026 - Flowering Kale

About the Image(s)

Flowering kale is a cool season plant; it loves cool weather. I had this growing in a planter in the front of my house. It has some interesting leaf patterns.
Taken at f-8, exposure time was 1/13 sec. ISO 200. I was using my 105 Macro lens for this shot with a polarizer attached camera on a tripod.

Another great image with lots of intricate detail. I especially like the how the reddish-pink color seems to be spreading outwards into the grayish leaves as if someone spilled water-color paint onto the flower.   Posted: 10/02/2026 12:57:41

I love all of the motion and detail in this beautiful kale. I like how the pink area is off center with the color seeping out into the veins. Great detail and composition.   Posted: 10/05/2026 12:42:22

Hi Dick, what a rich image in terms of textures, shapes and colours! I love the intricate details on the leaves, especially the y edges and the veins, which create a beautiful colour contrast.

I also love the level of detail and the colour grading, which spreads beautifully from the centre towards the edges of the frame.   Posted: 10/17/2026 10:16:16

The composition draws my eye from the center outward, following the swirling form to the outer leaves, with the gradual transition in color. I am plus/minus on the water droplets. Not sure if they add to the beauty of the photo or distract from the detail. As somewhat of a 'foodie', I appreciate the patterns that we have in some vegetables and fruit, just as in flowers. A great shot!   Posted: 10/19/2026 17:56:30

The water drops are due to rain during the night. Took this in the morning. This is one of those plants you only see in the Fall. They like cool to cold weather.   Posted: 10/21/2026 23:05:17

I have to agree with Mark about the water drops, especially those closer to the edges of the image. The drops catch my eye and are relatively bright. Some lack detail in a way that is distracting from the beauty of the colors and shapes of the cabbage leaves. Yet when I imagine the image without the drops, the image seems to lack something. Still, the drops closer to the center of the image are more interesting. Have you tried cropping tighter?

Thanks Kim, I find water drops can and do compete with the overall image many times. I can imagine this image without the `drops and I think it might be better.   Posted: 10/27/2026 19:40:05
