About the Image(s)

My husband and I spent several days in Rome and we walked to St. Peter's Square which was a 20-minute walk from where we were staying. I love how the moon was positioned just above the dome. I looked at the image in color and monochrome and thought the architecture popped better in monochrome.

Tech: Camera-Nikon Z 6ii, lens 24-70, shutter 1/1000 sec, f/5, ISO 100

Please provide me critical feedback.
Thank you.

Oh I can't wait to see this in person next month. How in the world are there not thousands of people in the way of your shot? Stunning...the moon is the bonus. Thank you for sharing.   Posted: 10/02/2026 22:47:52

When the sky is monotone, I almost always prefer a B & W interpretation as you have done here. Given how bright it appears to have been that day, you did a great job with keeping the highlights from getting blown out ... there is a great deal of detail present in the architecture and it provides the viewer with plenty to keep them engaged.

The only nit I can pick is if you draw a straight line from the cross on top of the dome to the right, through the moon, and further out, there is either a bird or a dust spec or similar that might look better cloned out.

Black and white was the right choice for this iconic structure. James' point about using monochrome when the sky adds no particular interest is a good one. Looks pretty sharp and that you've captured good detail. I bet you have many other winners from that visit!   Posted: 10/17/2026 19:34:05

Pauline, nice image of the Vatican. Mono is the way to go with the cloudless sky and also the building. I like architecture in black and white, as details tend to stand out more. The moon was a small surprise and recognizable after I looked at everything else. I'm guessing this is in the middle of the day, but then I'm not sure as there are so few people. Great image, hope you had a fun tour.   Posted: 10/19/2026 01:56:38

Nice use of monochrome. My only comment would be to lose a little of the sky to just above the moon.   Posted: 10/26/2026 20:40:29
