About the Image(s)

We went on a 14 day cruise in June into the Baltic, southern coast visiting Denmark, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia with Germany on the way back - was very interesting. Riga is an old city in Latvia and were lucky to witness the changing of the guard outside the Castle - it actually dates from the 14th Century, but much changes happened when under Russian rule - that's why the walls here don't look like a Castle! It is now the President's official residence - hence the guards and formality.

We were just in the right place at the right time - I tried to time the shot when boots were off the ground.

I used my phone (camera still in backpack!), but taken in Raw - then PP in Lightroom. The 2nd image is 'as taken'.

Delightful narrative...and wonderful photo! Yes, your timing was just right, to catch one boot in the air and the Guards marching "into" the frame. What SS did you use? This is very good.   Posted: 10/05/2026 16:41:52

This is a really well captured shot! The cadence of the steps is just right! Have you tried pushing the contrast a little? I would like a little more contrast. Other than that the shot is really good!   Posted: 10/05/2026 19:51:54

Many thanks Bob! I'm not very good with Contrast - often under using the slider! I'll experiment!   Posted: 10/22/2026 17:27:36

In addition to the slider, try using the White and Black sliders.   Posted: 10/22/2026 19:01:31

Rightfully or wrongfully, I mainly use them for controlling the histogram/clipping - except for background masks when making it less bright (highlights at same time). I also use the curve for adding punch - I will experiment on this.   Posted: 10/22/2026 20:42:54

Well times image with the feet is just the right position, having the guards hut in the image is perfect and the flag flying. Shame you are not a couple more inches to the right so the light is not completely in the image. One thing I do love, they are all wearing the same hat but they all look different. Good conversion and good monochrome.   Posted: 10/11/2026 10:02:41

To analyse the movement, nothing is better than an image. A video goes too fast. Here you can see the position of the legs, the hands, the rifle, ... That is for the drill sergeant...
Concerning the picture, I agree with Paul for the light.   Posted: 10/15/2026 13:51:05

Adrian, great capture! I like how the steps are all in sync yet the hands on the rifles are not!I like how you cropped out the left side as well. I agree with Bob about adding just a tad of contrast. Very good timing and nice image.   Posted: 10/16/2026 17:49:23

Many thanks Mary Ann. I thought at the time - 'not as well drilled as in other countries'!   Posted: 10/22/2026 17:30:34
