100mm, f/32, 1/60 sec, ISO 200 Flash
I wanted to shoot this a low key image so I added a flash. I played with the camera and flash settings until I achieved a result close to what I wanted.
Lightroom edits.
Global - exposure down, highlights and shadows down, increased Whites, Decreased Blacks, added a touch of clarity.
Used Radial and Linear masks to add light back into the flower and hide parts of the background that were still visible. I did not use select options in Lightroom masks

This low key image holds my attention. As Donald notes, the focus is tack sharp and petal details are well defined. These features reveal the dimensionality of the bloom for me. The play of light is interesting to me and my eye is drawn to the reveal of the two tips of petals that are highlighted, just peeking out beneath the longer ones at the lower right of the bloom.

When I had adjusted the lighting to be directed towards the top of the bloom I lost feeling. The longer lower petals just disappeared. To me, the length and flow of the lower petals gave a sense of movement from the top shorter petals to bottom.
Without having a bit of the background petals showing the flowers looked very flat. Posted: 10/26/2026 18:18:06
