About the Image(s)
This image was taken with my Sony RX10iv at a focal length of 220, ISO 100, 1600 sec, F5. The vessel was passing by our home on Lake Michigan. However, although the vessel photographed well, the rest of the scene, water and sky, was unremarkable. Therefore, in PhotoShop I enhanced the background with the Generative Fill tool, converted to BW and cleaned up distracting elements. Technically, this may be more manipulation than would be allowed in any competition, but I wanted to submit it here and see what you all think of my result. :)

Hi Ingrid,
Your image caught my eye in a good way. After reading your description, I was wondering if you could share the original image. It may help to see both the before and after to provide you with some feedback.
Best regards,

Hi Ingrid,
Thanks for posting the original. You took a pretty boring image and transformed it into a very dramatic scene. I think the B&W works really well. The foreground and reflections add nice touches. The image is nicely layered from front to back, and the sky tops off the drama. A very nicely thought out image.

Thanks, Greg. I'm glad you asked for the original image. I appreciate your thoughts and compliments. I wish I could take more credit for the final image - Generative AI in Photoshop amazed me in the choices it provided for me to work with.   Posted: 10/27/2026 22:39:13
Hi Ingrid - I think you solved your 'unremarkable' scene quite nicely and created a striking image in post. The sky and reflections play together well and creates a much improved image over the original. I might have titled it a bit differently - perhaps Calm Before the Storm or some such. The conversion to B&W was a good choice as the high contrast makes your vessel really stand out. Well done!   Posted: 10/13/2026 01:50:06
Thanks, Darcy! Even though AI played an important role in my final image, I've decided to include it in my 2027 calendar. I appreciate your positive feedback.   Posted: 10/27/2026 22:41:26
Hey Ingrid, Nice job with AI. The reflections in the foreground work well, though the bright white tops of the masts jump out a bit more than they probably should at that distance. The reeds are a great touch; they give the foreground some life and help pull the viewer in. The sky looks good overall, just a few little artefacts that stand out once you notice them. The boat itself is handled nicely. The black?and?white conversion suits the scene, and the tonal range in the sails works well. The super?white mast tops keep grabbing my attention. It is good fun to experiment to see what these tools can do. Always good to play around and see where they take you.   Posted: 10/13/2026 02:06:36
Thanks, Tom. AI is almost too valuable a tool and I suspect many commercial photographers may find their roles reduced going forward......   Posted: 10/27/2026 22:43:04
Hi Ingrid,
Greetings my friend.
I love the final edition of your image, suggesting or depicting an eye of the storm. What I see from the original image that you have shared, you did a splendin job on the post processing to justify the caption. A Master manipulator in a positive way though. Thak you for sharing. Nothing more to add. Cheers.

Thanks, Kamal. I certainly did have fun "manipulating" this image, and wish I could take credit for all of the choices the AI tool provided to me!   Posted: 10/27/2026 22:44:18
